#6 Gambler build

Postby smoke fan » Tue Jan 19, 2010 11:03 am

Ok, here is my first attempt at a Sprint Car.
It will be box stock just so I know all the ins and outs of these kits. I now the chassis should be updated, but I just want to get used to way these go together, find the problem area and get used to it. I want to get good at this one so I can do a better job on my future prodject(still need to order the parts but the decals are on the way to getting done).

Its just mocked up for these shots but the chassis is painted, body primed, engine started. Need to dig out the wings and see how I want to paint them.
I guess the one question would be , on the box art it shows just the outsides of the top wings are painted and not the insides, so is it best to mask them (what tape would be best for this?) and then paint the red on the outside and the lowwer nose wing is all red (but the flat part, which remains chrrome)
is this the most accurate? or should a person paint both sides of the uprights on the wings/

Thanks in advance for the help.

Follow the pics on the box for the wing paint. It depends on the teams preference how much of the wing gets painted. Other than these kits can be a bit fiddly, mainly with the suspension,it should go together with no fit issues. I've built six of these, and never had a fit problem. A quality masking tape should be all you need to mask off the wing. Iff you go through the finish line part of the forum you'll see wings painted in different ways.
Looks like your off to a great start. Looking forward to seeing it finished.

Another fiddly bit is the Jacobs Ladder. There is an "up" side and a "down" side.
Anyone have any secret tips on mounting the thing so that you don't have to re-glue it 3 times?
thanks,
robert

Forgot about that one. take your time and make sure you've got it around the right way. It fits one way but looks like it will go both.

Thanks for the tips. I was just looking at that part last night. pretty sure I've got it right now.

Another paint question in reguards to the wing, should I prime over the chrome plating? (as I am still not good at airbrushing and its to cold outside to vent the fumes, my wife and oldest have astmha, so practicing is out. I can shoot a little paint at a time during school hours)
Thanks Grant

Looks like a great start, Grant!

I left the jacobs ladder off entirely when I assembled the rear of my last sprinter. Getting it in after the fact was a lot of fun

You could do that and the finish will look fine.

Hey, great start on that model!!
I agree it's good to go "box stock" for a first one, so that you get a handle on what fits well and what doesn't.
With the Jacob's Ladder, I have found it can fit either way, but (in my opinion) it is best if the "pin" that slots into the birdcage points downward slightly.
This gives the best stance, otherwise the rear of the car sits too low (arguably - it's my opinion only).

You may have already done it so my response may be too late but typically I strip the chrome plating from the wing surfaces by dunking them into Easy-Off sprayed into a plastic tub overnight. (Yellow can) There are nasty mould circles on the inside of the wings that will jump out when painted and, frankly the chrome plating on most of the wing pieces is not too good. For painting one side I use Tamiya yellow masking tape, just be sure to really burnish it down before painting. I've tried lots of different methods for painting the aluminum on the insides of wings and lately have been pleased with a good aluminum paint sprayed lightly over the surfaces, then buffed out. Check with others on the board for their method. And good luck on the build. Looks realy good so far.

Well, headed her into turn 1 full bore on the weekend to do some hot laps but caught the outside cushin and barrel rolled her 8 times. She is a complete write off, except for the wheels, tires and block. maybe a few other salvageable pieces  .

Actually had her on the deep freeze waiting to put the decals on when the shelves above decided to come down(I guess acouple of hundred pounds os accounting records were to heavy for the shelves) came down right on top of her. its now in more pieces than I started with!

was mad, but kind of got over it, what else do you do  . I did manage to get alot of build time in this weekend and actually got the new one ready for paint. the engines done, chassis is painted and coming together. Will still do the #6 Gambler car as I had 1 kit with no decals(gave them away) so it will just be a replacement.
Keep you posted with pics soon.
